Boren Scholarship
Deadlines:

Fellowship amount:
- 27-52 weeks abroad: up to $24,000
- 25-36 weeks abroad: up to $20,000
- 12-24 weeks: up to $12,000
- Up to $12,000 for domestic language study
Scholarship amount:
- 25-52 weeks: up to $20,000
- 12-24 weeks: up to $10,000
- 8-11 weeks: up to $8,000 (STEM majors only)
The Boren Awards provide up to $30,000 in funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students to study languages, geographic areas, and disciplines critical to U.S. national security and underrepresented in study abroad (the countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded).
Undergraduate scholarships are for 6 to 12 months abroad, and graduate fellowships are for 3 to 24 months in the U.S. and abroad. There is a minimum one-year government service requirement for Boren recipients after graduation. This award is an excellent “in” for careers in the federal government that require skills in critical languages
