Experiential Learning Scholarship

Deadlines:

This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students pursuing approved experiential learning activities.

UGA Study Away Passport Initiative Scholarship

Amount: up to $150

Deadline: March 1, 2022 (deadline extended!)

The Office of Global Engagement is excited to announce our new initiative to increase the number of UGA students with passports. This Passport Initiative is in place to reimburse students for the cost of getting a passport through UGA Passport Services up to $150. This application is open to all UGA undergraduate students who have never received an adult passport before (meaning this would either be their first passport ever, or their last passport was issued to them before the age of 16).

 

Cost breakdown of U.S. Passport fees:

  • Application fee $110.00
  • Execution fee $35.00
  • Passport photo from Tate UGA Passport Services $5.00
  • Total cost for student: $150.00

HISP Honors Scholarship

Deadline:

  • Spring 2021: November 2, 2020 at 12:00 pm

Amount: $2,500- $5,000

This award supports second and third year Honors students engaging in overseas opportunities by providing 50- 60 scholarships per hear. Students have used HISP funding to participate in traditional university-sponsored study abroad programs, university-to-university exchanges, language institutes, internships, and research and public service projects.

OGE Asia Georgia Internship Connection Scholarship

Deadlines:

  • Fall 2022: April 15, 2021

Amount: up to $5,000

The Asia-Georgia Internship Connection scholarship awards up to $5,000 per student. Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students are eligible. The primary objective of this grant is to fund academic credit bearing internships; however, a small subset of grants can be used to fund students receiving academic credit for international research opportunities.

Lee Roy B. Giles Encouragement Award

Amount: $500

Established in 2010 by his wife, Dr. Freda Scott Giles, the Lee Roy B. Giles Encouragement Award honors the legacy of Mr. Giles with a cash award given to a student who has exhibited some form of excellence in the area of African American Studies, whether in research, practical application, or academic experience. The application committee chooses one graduate student and one undergraduate student to receive the award each spring. Preference shown to those who meet the following criteria, but we welcome all interested applicants:

  • students who major, minor, or earn a certificate in African American Studies;
  • graduate students engaged in research relevant to African American Studies; 
  • students who fit the above criteria who have been accepted into a non-European study abroad program

Brittney Fox Watts Study Abroad in Sustainability Scholarship

The Brittney Fox Watts Endowment for Study Abroad in Sustainability provides support to students who share passions for travel, experiencing different cultures, and embracing sustainable practices to address the health and well-being of individuals and communities around the globe. A $500 enhancement will be provided to select UGA undergraduate and graduate students attending a UGA sponsored Education Abroad or exchange program focused on sustainability. College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences International Travel Scholarship

Deadlines:

  • Spring programs: November 1, 2021
  • Summer and Fall programs: March 1, 2022

Amount: $800

International travel scholarships are available to support CAES student travel to study abroad programs and international internship programs. Students may apply in one of two application cycles, according to their departure date. Students departing on an international program during the current fall semester or spring semester of the following year should apply between August 1 - November 1. Students departing during the Maymester or summer semester should apply between December 1 - March 1. Applications received by the deadline date will be given full consideration.

Rowan Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship encourages and supports an engineering student’s desire to broaden their views and perspective of the world community. The focus of the scholarship is to help students move out of their academic comfort zone and to discover the far-reaching impact that engineering has on society. Selection for this scholarship is based on academic performance and need; preference will be given to students who select non-English speaking destinations and enroll in engineering coursework at those destinations. The financial assistance is provided to help off-set study abroad expenses not covered by other scholarships including the HOPE scholarship program.

David L. Thompson Study Abroad in Classics Scholarship

The David L. Thompson Studies Abroad Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. David Lowell Thompson, a former member of the Classics Department faculty. The scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate students who study abroad in the Classics within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Selection criteria are based upon academic excellence, with preference given to majors, minors, and graduate students in the Department of Classics. Recipients of the Thompson Scholarship must enroll in and complete the Study Abroad Program in Rome sponsored by the University of Georgia Department of Classics.

Linda J. Piper Award for Studies Abroad

The Linda J. Piper Award for Studies Abroad Fund is a joint fund of the Departments of Classics and History, administered by the Classics Department. The award, established in honor of Professor Linda J. Piper, is to alternate between the Departments of Classics and History with Classics bestowing the award in odd-numbered years. It is intended to assist students to offset expenses, such as tuition, fees, and transportation costs, directly related to study abroad. All students majoring in the Classics Department are eligible to apply for the award.

Department of History Study Abroad Scholarship

The History Department offers history majors the opportunity to apply for the History Department Study Abroad Scholarship, an undergraduate scholarship created to support student research to encourage undergraduate history majors who wish to participate in an official UGA study abroad program. Selection for this award is based on financial need, academic promise, and the applicant’s own words, conveyed through a one‐page essay. The History Department will award grants by competitive application. The grants will vary in amount according to the needs of individual students. They are intended to cover costs associated with travel and study abroad.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)

  • graduate students- up to $18,000 for tuition and fees and a $15,000 stipend
  • undergraduate students- $10,000 for tuition and fees and a $5,000 stipend

The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute at the University of Georgia is pleased to announce its Academic Year and Summer competition for FLAS Fellowships to study Portuguese and Quechua. The purpose of the FLAS Fellowship program is: “To assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area studies, to stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency, and to develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.”

The Department of Romance Languages French Study Abroad Award is a prize worth up to $1000 (depending on the availability of funding) for French-language study in a French-speaking country. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Georgia. The award recipient will be recognized at the Pi Delta Phi ceremony in April.

Germanic and Slavic Studies Kicklighter Study Abroad Travel Grants

Amount: $500 - $1,000

Each year, the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies awards several Kicklighter travel grants to students planning to study abroad during the summer, for one semester, or for the entire academic year. Selection criteria include the student’s overall academic standing, students’ proficiency in German or Russian, course work in the field, and the nature and quality of the program a student plans to attend. Eligible to apply are students with majors or minors in German, Russian, and Germanic & Slavic Languages.

Institute for American Universities (IAU) College Meredith Hope Emerson French Honor Scholarship

The Institute for American Universities (IAU), with study abroad programs in Aix-en-Provence, France, is proud to introduce the Meredith Hope Emerson French Studies Scholarship Program for qualified University of Georgia (UGA) students interested in a semester or summer abroad in France with IAU. The scholarship program, created in memory of Meredith Hope Emerson, a former IAU French Honors Student, offers two half-tuition semester scholarships and one half-tuition summer scholarship for qualified UGA students enrolled in IAU French Studies classes.

Modern Languages Scholarship

Amount: $300

The Modern Languages Scholarship Fund was established in 1976 to provide scholarship money for students majoring in modern foreign languages. The competition is limited to full-time undergraduate students whose declared majors are in the Department of Romance Languages or Foreign Language Education in Romance Languages. Normally four awards of approximately $300 granted to students in study abroad programs in Summer or Fall.

SPIA Public and International Affairs

The School of Public and International Affairs is offering need-based scholarships for students wishing to participate in SPIA Study Abroad programs. All students with a SPIA major (political science or international affairs) declared before the current term and who have filed a FAFSA form with the Office of Student Financial Aid are eligible to apply. Tinker Foundation-LACSI Graduate Field Research Award

The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) is pleased to announce its 2020 Tinker Foundation-LACSI Graduate Field Research Award Competition.  Travel awards are granted to highly qualified University of Georgia graduate students from any discipline interested in conducting preliminary graduate field research in the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking Latin American and Caribbean region, excluding Puerto Rico, during summer 2020.  All masters or doctoral students with an interest in carrying out graduate research in Latin America are encouraged to apply.
